Yuan Longping is a world-famous agronomist with the reputation of "the Father of Hybrid Rice". He smashed the traditional concept about self-pollinating characteristic of crops, such as rice, that is they have no hybrid advantage. In the selecting, popularizing of three strains of hybrid rice, two strains of hybrid rice and super rice, he has made excellent initial contribution. The hybrid rice he invented increased the rice's total output of the world by 20 percent and of China by 50 percent. It obtained tremendous social and economic benefits.As the founder of hybrid rice research, Yuan Longping has enriched and developed the theory and technology of crop heredity breeding, has created the huge wealth for the society, has formed his the science method system, and has carried forward great science spirit. Through scanning the course of Yuan Longping's science research, the article expounded the huge contribution that he has made in the aspects of academy and the social economy; discussed the methods of observation, experiment, analogy, inspiration thought as well as the opportunity in his science research; summarized his science spirit of reason, factualism, suspicion, innovation, cooperation, etc.Nowadays, it has very important practical meaning for China to explain Yuan Longping's science contributions, science methods as well as science spirit. It also has active effect to carry forward scientists' patriotism; enhance the whole nation's science sense; encourage the broad science research staffs to climb the summit of science and technology; edify the adolescent's innovation thought and even form a prevailing custom of respecting the persons with ability, encouraging innovation in the society.
