Over the past two decades, a majority of the theoretical and empirical work conducted in the achievement motivation literature has used an achievement goal perspective.Researchers in this tradition assume that all actions are given meaning, direction, and purpose by the goals that individuals seek out.Theories of achievement goals are reviewed, such as, the original mastery-performance goal dichotomy, the trichotomous achievement goal framework, the 2 X 2 achievement goal framework, social goal, relationship between learning strategies and achievement goals, and the relationship between perceived ability and achievement goals. The characteristics, structures, and consequence variablities of achievement goals are investigatedInterviews and surveys were given to 663 students in Tianjin 21 middle school and Tianjin Haihe middle school, and three questions were investigated-the categories of goals that students hold, interrelations among general achievement goals, and interrelations between achievement goals and academic consequence variables.Besides, the development of achievement goals and social goals are investigated. The main findings include: (1) Students hold multiple academic and social goals; (2) Different achievement goals are correlated with different social goals. For example,mastery-approach goal is positively correlated with social responsibility goal and social affiliation goal; however, performance-approach goal is positively correlated with social approval goal and social status goal; (3) The development of general achievement goals is different from the development of mathematical achievement goals. Two general mastery goals decline and two mathematicial approach goals decline along with the grade;(4)As to mathematics, different achievement goals are correlated with different academic consequence variables. For example, mastery-approach goal is positively correlated with degree of satisfaction about mathematics; however, performance-avoidance goal is negatively correlated with it.Secondly, based on the results of our studies, 2X2 achievement goal framework is discussed. Finally, the problems of the research are presented, and implications of future research on the achievement goals are discussed.
