Domestication And Foreignization In C-E Literary Translation

There has been heated debate on cultural translation in the West as well as in China, among which is the controversy over domestication and foreignization. It's desirable that this topic arouse much attention, but the confusion and misunderstanding between different advocates has made the debate not so constructive.After a survey and study of a body of previous studies, this thesis tries to clear the misunderstandings between different parties and make clear the definitions and sense of domestication and foreignization, so that such a clarification should benefit later studies and discussions. Besides, this thesis tries to apply the context theory of Systemic-Functional Grammar to analyze the influence of context on translators' choice of translation strategies. Through the case study of Fu Zao and its English translation Turbulence, the thesis further demonstrates the influence of context on translation practice.Finally, this thesis has proposed some practical translation methods under the strategies of domestication and foreignization. There are much more translation methods that the translators can explore and apply in translation practice.Literary works are collections of cultural phenomena and are abundant in cultural information and cultural value, therefore, in literary translation, translators should mainly apply foreignization strategy to transmit cultural information. However, translators should not impose too much cultural information on the TL readers to the extent that the readers may lose the interest to read on, so when, in some context, foreignization is impossible, translators should apply domestication as the supplementary strategy.In conclusion, it is "foreignization first, domestication second". However, translators should not put too much emphasis on foreignization while ignoring domestication. The two strategies are both important and are complementary to each other in literary translation.
