Numeral abbreviation has been an important way of word-formation of the lexical system of modern Chinese, and it is worth studying. However, it still hasn't drawn enough attention and study. This paper studies, describes, and explains numeral abbreviation synchronically, on the basis of absorbing and using former study for reference. It discusses numeral abbreviation in terms of its origin, construction, features, pragmatics and standardization in theory as well as in practice, with abundant and correlative materials.Numeral abbreviation can be categorized as ancient, modern and foreign in its origin. Ancient numeral abbreviations are mostly proper noun, and distribute in about 13 fields; modern numeral abbreviations grow enormously with the development of society, and distribute in about 19 fields; foreign numeral abbreviations are much less, because of the relatively short time that foreign languages have flooded into Chinese, and the narrowness of their fields. The construction of numeral abbreviation can be roughly grouped into four types: subordination, coordination, subject+predicate and verb+object. Among them, subordination occupies the main part. Numeral abbreviation can be derived from either extracting the first, the middle or the last morpheme from its original words or generalizing them. Numeral abbreviation consists of four classes: word, phrase, sentence and text in terms of its original words. Most numeral abbreviations are disyllabic and quadrisyllable, and only a small number of them are trisyllabic and polysyllabic. Quantifier in numeral abbreviation breaks the restriction of grammar rules, and modifies noun, verb, adjective, adverb, numeral, empty word and affix.Numeral abbreviation can be grouped into classes that influenced by space-time change, which confines its application. Therefore, the application of numeral abbreviation depends on the context. In the end, this paper studies the basic rules involved in the standardization of numeral abbreviation. They are necessity and suitability.
