Film is a kind of popular mass entertainment almost known bv everyOne.Withthe development of cultural exchanges be.tween China and the world.more andmore western films are introduced to Chinese audiences either in dubbed orsubtitled form.Though film exchange plays an important role, fihn trajlslation hasnot received its due attention. The thesis has aimed to discuss the translation principle applied in filmtranslation.First, the author briefly introduced the nature, development and role of films, touched on the current studies of film translation, and explained the aim.focus and method of this thesis. The first part focused on the characteristics and functions of film fanguage.Thesecond part covered twO forms of film translation, namely, dubbing and subtitling, and the former Was the main concern of the thesis. In the same pan me authOr als0illustrated the specific difficulties and characteristics of film translatiOn.ajld t11e reason of choosing Professor Peter Newmark'S translation principle. As film Was aJl entertaining and cultural exchange form, the emphasis of translation should be on culture transference but not linguistics.Communicative translation waLs the mainprinciple applied in film translation due to its receptor-centered focus, and semantictranslation Was an auxiliary method. The third part elaborated the application of the above.mentioned Drinciple inthree aspects: information transmission, aesthetics transmission and emOtionaltransference.Information transmission included the relevant inf-0nnation of thecharacters and specific scene in the film,as well as relevant cultural transmission.Aesthetics transmission was both external and intemal, namely, aesthetics inlanguage itself, agreement of lip movements, body language and lines. Some rhetorical devices were used to express similar emotions as the original film haS. In the conclusion part, the author summed up the main idea of the thesis andpointed out that though film translation Was not serious literature translation,it should receive more attention from the translation circle.
