Characterization is one of the basic elements of the novel. In Shishuoxinyu, avariety of characters are created. Based on the study of the characters in the novel, mythesis consists of six chapters. In Chapter I, I summarize the features of characterization. One is that all thepersonages in the novel are real. The other is consistency. In order to achieve artisticcharacterization, the author makes use of individual language, comparison, detaileddescription and profound psychological description. Chapter II mainly deals with the female characters in the novel which are dividedinto four types according to their features. In Chapter III ,the images of the children aresummed up three types of "wisdom", "kindness", and "consideration". The analysis ofmandarins in the novel forms Chapter IV. The number of the mandarins who are vividlydepicted is larger than that of other groups of people. In Chapter V, I mainly analyze thesimilarities and dissimilarities among the influential officials. Chapter VI focuses on theemperors and the kings who are divided into "the mediocre" and "the crafty" according totheir characteristics. The thesis of mine aims at a better understanding of the novel through theanalysis of the striking characters.
