| It was recorded in Shi Ji written by Sima Qian: "Zhuangzi, first name Zhou, was a person born in Meng. Zhou had once been an official of Qiyuan in Meng. He was contemporary with King Hui of Liang and King Xuan of Qi." This record could be seen as the existing first information about the homeland of Zhuangzi. As Sima Qian didn't make it clear the exact location of "Meng", people have different opinions about this issue. In the history, "Meng" was said lacated at Song, Liang, Qi, Chu, Lu and other ancient states. And in modern times, there are still different views about the homeland of Zhuangzi, like Shangqiu of Henan, Dongming of Shandong and Mengcheng of Anhui etc.There have been a lot of dispute about the homeland of Zhuangzi both in the history and modern times, but most of them are just retelling of different books. Last Spring, after consulting some ancient books and chorographies, I went north to Shangqiu, Henan with my tutor and senior brother schoolmate to explore the homeland of Zhuangzi. This Spring, I went to visit Heze, Shandong to discern the validity of "Dongming theory". With the help of local government and organizations, we collected a lot of source materials including ancient inscriptions, textual records and folklores. All of these has influence on this paper that cannot be ignored.There are three chapters in this dissertation. The first chapter expatiates on different opinions about thehomeland of Zhuangzi, which including "Songmeng", "Liangmeng", "Qimeng", "Lumeng" and "Chumeng" etc. The second chapter will study and discriminate some modern opinions like "Henan Shuo", "Shandong Dongming Shuo", "Anhui Mengcheng Shuo" etc. And the "Anhui Mengcheng Shuo" which is very popular in recent years is mostly criticized in this chapter. The third chapter come to the conclusion that the homeland of Zhuangzi is in the north-east of Shangqiu, Henan according to the "hujian" proof in Shi Ji, some historical geography books and the supplementary evidence in Zhuangzi.
