A Report On The C-E Translation Of “The Ancient City Of Shangqiu”

With the improvement of China's economic level and international status,China's tourism industry is showing great vitality.In order to attract foreign tourists and spread Chinese culture,more and more tourist attractions have added English introduction.As non-literary text,the introduction of scenic spots has the function of guiding and publicizing.Therefore,the introduction of scenic spots with a high quality plays an important role in cultural transmission.Under this context,the translator chose “the ancient city of Shangqiu” in her hometown as the translation material of this report,aiming at promoting the development of Shangqiu's tourism and spreading the culture of the ancient city.In addition,under the guidance of Skopos theory,the translator analyzed the translation difficulties and explored their solutions,hoping that her experience can provide useful references for other translators.This report is divided into five Chapters.Chapter One is about the description of this task,including the background and significance of the translation project,as well as the contents of the source text and the research status.Chapter Two deals with the introduction of Skopos theory,briefly explaining the guiding role of Skopos theory in translating process.Chapter Three focuses on the translation process which includes three stages: preparation,translation and proofreading.Firstly,the textual features were analyzed and the translation tools were selected in preparation stage.Secondly,the translation stage is about the introduction of the difficulties encountered in the translation process.Finally,proofreading is conducted.Chapter Four is the case analysis.Under the guidance of Skopos theory,it deals with the treatment of translation difficulties.With regard to the translation of historical information vocabularies and cultural-loaded elements,the methods of addition,omission,free translation and annotation are selected flexibly,taking into account the cultural background of the target language readers.As for the names of scenic spots,transliteration and free translation are mainly adopted.Chapter Five is the summary of the translation practice.Through this translation practice,the translator has deepened her understanding of translation theories and realized her shortcomings: bilingualism is not solid,information searching ability is not strong and so on.In future translation practice,more attention to the cultivation of these abilities will be paid.
