A Study On E-C Translation Techniques Of Business Contracts Through Stylistic Analysis

Through the analysis of two samples, this thesis generalizes the stylistic characteristics of English business contracts at lexical, syntactic and textual levels. Then it further discusses the E-C translation techniques of business contracts.At lexical level, English business contracts mainly demonstrate the following characteristics: the frequent use of archaic words, formal words, technical terms and coordinate words. Their characteristics at syntactic level are more complex. This thesis analyses them through the aspects of word types, grammatical items, clause types and sentence types. (1) word types: nouns, prepositions and articles enjoy a much higher frequency than other word types while pronouns are scarcely used. (2) grammatical items: the frequent use of nominalization, shall + verb, post-modification, adverbial phrases and extensive use of passive voice. (3) clause types: conditional clauses are frequently used. (4) sentence types: long sentences are frequently used and all the sentences are declarative sentences.The translation standards of business contracts are discussed by analyzing the theories of Yan Fu, Nida and Tytler. A good rendition of business contracts at first should be faithful, not only to the original text's content, but also to the style. Secondly, it should be smooth and idiomatic and conform to the target language's expressing habits. What's more, translators should adopt literal translation as translation strategy. As to the specific E-C translation strategies of business contracts, this thesis studies at lexical, syntactic and textual levels on the basis of their stylistic characteristics.
