English and Chinese postpositive attributive differs not only in types, but also in forms, so it's very difficult to compare their systems. Seldom do people study on them, saying nothing of covering their deep mechanism of coming to being. Their main reasons are the followings—affecting by pragmatism and short of guidance of modern linguistic theories. This dissertation will adopt a cognitive approach and follow the foundational assumptions of cognitive linguistics "human experience→conceptualization→schematization→linguistic form" to make a contrastive study of English and Chinese passive, aiming at uncovering the deep mechanism which underlies the similarities and differences between English and Chinese postpositive attributive.There are four chapters in the dissertation.Chapter One addresses the general aims, status quo and problems concerning English and Chinese contrastive studies, leading to the problems concerning a contrastive study of English and Chinese postpositive attributive. Chapter Two begins with the definition of attributive in English and Chinese, and ascertains the identifying criterion of English and Chinese postpositive attributive. This part also analyzes the syntax units used as English and Chinese postpositive attributive, and gives a general classification. Through the behaving forms description of English and Chinese postpositive attributive, the dissertation probes into their causes of formation, and points out the significance to the translation between English and Chinese. Chapter There introduces the quomodoes of English and Chinese postpositive attributive forward transmission, analyzes their causes, compares the different expressing effects, and ends with the affection to translation. Chapter Four is the sum-up of the dissertation. It includes the conclusion and expectation to the future researches.
