Based on the English-Chinese translation of Financial English---New Textbook Series in 21st Century, this translation practice report focuses on the discussion of English postposive attributives and the corresponding translation methods that can be employed in the process of translation.English postposive attributives are more diversified in formation and more widely used than those in Chinese, and the syntactic function of English postposive attributives is not always equivalent to its semantic relation, therefore,it is quite difficult to translate English postposive attributives well.Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory holds that translation should not stick to formal equivalence to realize literal equivalence, but to achieve functional equivalence between two languages. This translation practice report analyzes the syntactic and semantic features of English postpositive attributes and holds that there are three semantic features of English postpositive:1)describing and modifying the headword;2)explaining and supplementing the headword;and 3)logically showing the circumstance of actions in the main clause.According to the different semantic features of the post attributive, this translation practice report points out that postpositive attributes can be translated with the methods of preposing, dividing, and converting respectively. The translation practice proves that the fully understanding of different semantic features of postpositive attributes contributes to the choice of translation strategies and maximize the equivalence between the original text and the target text. |
