Westernization trends in May 4th period and in the 1930's were the two majorwesternization trends in the modern history of China.The westernization in the 1930'semphasized on the way of achieving China's modernization. Facing the reform andrenovation of traditional culture and the integration and internalization of the westernculture, questions like how to construct and develop Chinese culture with its owncharacteristics remain to be solved in the process of China's modernization.The paper aimsat reviewing the exploration of 1930's intellectuals on the road of modernization ofChinese culture by applying the theory of modernization research and comparative historyapproach. In this way, we can well reflect on how western culture was treated in the past,which will benefit China's modernization. The paper is mainly composed of five parts. Part one is a brief review of the creation and development of the WesternizationTheory in China's ideology history. It first introduces the process in which the theoryevolves from the material to institution till thought at last. Then this part summarizes theWesternization Theory in the 1930's from the perspectives of representative, theorybackground, attitudes towards Chinese and western cultures and way of westernizationrespectively. Part two discusses the representative of westernization in 1930's — full scalewesternization. The thoughts of HuShi and Chen Xujing are reviewed in this part. Part three analyzes the features of westernization in the 1930's: evolution of unitaryculture, deviation of the culture dimensionality, inertia of cultures, attachment of moreimportance to cultural reform than to economic reform. Part four is the conclusion. This part points out the significance of westernization inthe 1930's to China's modernization. Part five domenstrates that the debate between Chinese and western culture ranthough China's whole modern history. And this forther proves that the transformation ofculture plays the role of forerunner in the process of history transformation. Therefore itis of great significance to propose and study this topic.
