Southern and Northern Dynasties is an important period in Chinese history that connects the Qin-Han civilization and the Sui-Tang civilization. This thesis discusses roundly trade between China and the Western Region in Southern and Northern dynasties. The thesis Consists of three parts. The first part discusses the three commercial road: the trans-grassland road, henan road and oasis-silk road(also referred to Desert Silk Road);The second part discusses prosperity in this period in three ways: frequency of tribute-paying trade, frequency of folk trade and coming of western merchant, using of international money on the Silk Road. The third part discusses causes, effects and characteristics. According to these, the author infer that Southern and Northern Dynasties is not a black period, is important period of communications between China and the West Region, and lie a solid foundation for overall prosperity in Sui-Tang Dynasties.
