People kept emphasizing "National is global", while we can't help asking: how tounderstand the realistic meaning of this slogan? how to embody nationality of aestheticart in graphic design? how to emphasize its nationality while maintain the notion ofwalk out towards outside world Instead of mechanically apply Chinese traditionalpaintings and replace globalization with nationality. These kinds of problems haven'tbeen clearly solved yet. It is difficult for us to solve these problems in the realistic artcreation if we regard it as a mere slogan. With these ideas, the author takes Japanesegraphic design which is very popular both in the east and the west as a research subject,Scrutinize works of Japanese famous designers, the author ponders and analyzes thephenomenon of Japanese graphic success in its applying modern visual elements tointerpret national character from the aspects of Japanese history, religion and culture. This paper is organized into the following 5 parts. Chaptert1, the graphic design works of Japan which embodies both aestheticcharacteristics of nationality and westernization is the result of hundred year's easternand western cultural conflict behind. We can't explain Japanese double aestheticcharacteristics that Japanese graphic design has if we don't examine history as a whole.So this chapter begins with the western Christian culture influx in 16th century and itsinfluence on Japanese industrial arts; when Emperor Meiji started his reform Japanentirely indulged into western culture. Japanese people started reflect the nationality ofits industrial arts; During the period of Sino-Japan war, World war I and World war III,Japan attempted to the amalgamate national aesthetic with western painting intechniques of arts and crafts; this continued till it reach to contemporary status. Theauthor exhibits the amalgamation process of Japan's exploring eastern and western artswith the background of economy, thought and culture.Chaper2, This chapter deeply explores how modern western designing thoughtinfluences Japanese graphic design. The author makes her discusses from two aspects:First, the historical process of modern school painting and modern design thoughtspromulgate into Japan; Second, the great influences and aesthetic implication of modernschool painting and modern design thoughts have made on modern of Japanese graphicdesign. This chapter mainly introduces the influences that western design language andmodern school painting language have on Japanese design. Chapter3 focus on the embodiment of traditional culture in Japanese graphic design.Mainly through visual language, its graphic design works expresses certaincharacteristics of traditional culture. This kind of visual expression can be summarizedinto two levels: Act on vision and non-Act on sense. The former refers to the use oftraditional painting and traditional folk-custom: Non-Act on sense Exceeds surfaceattention and emphasize consideration of the corresponding relationship betweentraditional visual language and traditional philosophy, this comes from a construing ofvision to the apperceive of soul. Therefore using eastern traditional thinking method andtasting to manifest the content of design. Chapter4 Based on the conclusion of the former two chapters, the author furtheranalyzes the linking method of western modern visual language and Japanese nationalaesthetic judgment. A two level conclusion is made; First, the replacement of graphicbasic elements and the modernization of visual taste. Second,further understanding ofnational aesthetic sensibility and the following of trends. The embodiment of nationalaesthetic of graphic design rise up to a kind of key thinking path and creative expressionof eastern aesthetic sensibility. Chapter5, The author analyzes the reason of Japanese graphic design's success byutilize western design language to show national character.
