Ancient Chinese buildings enjoy worldwide renown for their profound philosophical connotations, superb architectural technology, rich aesthetic features and unique as one of the three great ancient architectural systems in the world. As a result of the three big architectural waves in Qin and Han Dynasties, Tang and Song Dynasties, and Ming and Qing Dynasties, ancient Chinese buildings have become a brilliant, huge treasure house of numerous structures, and a most precious historical and cultural heritage for the Chinese people as well.The art of ancient Chinese buildings has established in its development a typical style that is characterized by woodwork, upturned eaves and sets of brackets on top, distinct grades, group harmony and excellent unity with nature, which in turn demonstrates fully and accordingly in different buildings Confucian, Taoist, and Buddhist ideas and the political, economical, and social states of different historical periods. It is a crystallization of ancient Chinese wisdom and a historic monument to the 5000-year long Chinese civilization.This thesis aims at entrusting new values to the precious historic and cultural heritage through an investigation of the profound ideological connotations and the abundant artistic features, and further, attempts to find a comprehensive developing way that both properly protect and permanently exploit these buildings under the guidance of the theory of sustainable development.
