Every language has words of color while for different cultures it has diverse recognition and expressions for the same color. Consequently, the comparative research in words of color among different languages will help to explore the universality and national characteristic of language.The thesis is focused on the traditional five colors, and it compares the words of color in Korean and Chinese in the synchronic level. Word-formation and semantic features are divided in the aspect of comparison. The comparison between semantic features includes emotional coloring and cultural symbol.The thesis is divided into three chapters.The first chapter mainly discusses the writing purpose, method of research and the research achievement done by other researchers.The second chapter analyzes the word-formation of words of color between Korean and Chinese, for example, additional word-formation, inflexion word-formation, overlapped word-formation, composition, etc. And by comparing and analyzing them, the thesis will conclude the similarities and differences in word-formation of words of color between Korean and Chinese.The third chapter makes a comparison to the words of color in emotional coloring and cultural symbol from semantic features. The emotional coloring analyzes the words of color from the colors of the spectrum, brightness, pureness, then it concludes the similarities and differences of expression structure and symbols. The cultural symbol makes a comparison of the words and phrases of two languages then it concludes the cultural features of two nations.What is said above will help to explore the similarities and national features of two countries and to teach and learn the vocabularies of two countries as asecond language respectively. So this thesis has theoretical and realistic meaning to some degree.
