Firstly, the thesis introduces the author's understanding of the theory and practice of teaching Chinese as foreign language in China, and outlines the history of teaching Chinese in Thailand. It advances the issue for discussion: distant teaching and learning of Chinese for Thai. The study of this issue, we have made webpage for Chinese learners of Thai. We have mainly designed and developed a multi-media courseware of Mandarin's sound system and put it on the Internet. Experiments and surveys are employed to evaluate the effectiveness of the courseware. The evaluation indicates that learners are less dependent on time and space using this web-based method than receiving classroom instruction; that the learning effect by this method is roughly the same with that of the classroom instruction; and that the expected goal is achieved.Based on the webpage designing and courseware developing, the thesis provides the speculation on the strong and weak points of the multi-media courseware. We think that the multi-media courseware has many advantages. However, there are some disadvantages such as lacking intelligence, insufficient control of learners' voluntary attention. Therefore, a highly efficient courseware brings forward a special demand of the designer and developer. The thesis also has a preliminary discussion on the relationship between teaching and learning through multi-media and second language acquisition. We think that the use of the Internet-based multi-media courseware is an important way of enhancing second language acquisition efficiency; that it is also a window through which we can observe the process and factors of L2 Acquisition. Our designing and developing of the courseware needs to be further improved. Courseware of the lexical and grammatical items designed for Thai students also needs to be completed in the future.
