Since the 19th century, the first researchers have surveyed the field of mass culture. During the 20th century, the field attracted the attention of numerous scholars and various academic schools tried to interpret it in their own ways. With China's reform and opening up to the outside world, Chinese people are fond of mass culture in a rapid pace and theory of it becomes one of the main focuses of Chinese scholars.Though concerned and explored by a variety of scholars, the concept of mass culture has remained unclear yet. At the beginning, some scholars merely defined it descriptively;therefore, what one can see is not a real sense of the concept, but a series of mass culture patterns. However, there do exist the summary of those essential contents of mass culture. In this thesis, I summarize the contents as follows: mass culture is the process of spiritual creative activities and the forthcoming achievements, which reflect industrialized technology and public life in a commodity (market) economic condition, disseminate in the community, adapt to the community's cultural taste, and are accepted and participate in by the people. While the concept is still in a controversy, the characteristics of mass culture have reached a consensus—secular, commercial, strong influential, technical, recreational and other characteristics.Based on modern computer and internet technology, the emerging network popular language becomes a new style of mass culture, with the rapid development of the latter. In this thesis, I try to define the network popular language as the following: it is a form of words which is widely used on the internet by the netizen in a certain period, which consists of prevailing words, phrases, sentences and specific sentence patterns propelled by the network media, similar to oral language, acted as an effective medium and a integrated product of socio—political, economic, cultural, environmental and psychological factors. The popular network language I referred to in this thesis is the popular language in the internet conversations, excluding that exists in the network literature.Network popular language is a new style of mass culture, thus it has the same characteristics as those of mass culture, and this thesis find the features of mass culture— secular, commercial, strong influential, technical, recreational by examining on popularlanguage on network. And on the basis of analyses, attempt to constraint network popular language, in order to introduce some feasible solution — rectified network popular language by technically, using recreational of network popular language to strengthen mass culture develop formally, control network popular language by the commercial policy. To influent the development of mass culture by network popular language, in order to achieve mass culture develops healthy.
