For a considerably long period of time, the traditional methodology has been in the leading position. EFL teachers have laid great emphasis on language itself, i.e., phonetics, vocabulary and grammar. And to some extent, they have neglected the cultivation of the students' cross-cultural communicative competence, or cultural awareness. Thus, after years' of English study, the students still find themselves at a loss when they communicate directly with the native English speakers.EFL teaching in colleges has been influenced by CET4 and CET6. The tests are considered to be scientific and efficient. They have, to some extent, improved the EFL teaching in colleges. But there are many problems remaining unsolved. At present, the teaching of written English is the most important aspect in EFL teaching. The teaching of spoken English is extremely insufficient. Most of the students just memorize the vocabulary specified in the syllabus. They can read comparatively difficult professional articles, but cannot communicate appropriately with the native speakers of English.Another insufficiency is that there is not enough practice on sociocultural competence on the basis of linguistic competence emphasis. Thus, the communicative competence is not improved.I try to find out in this thesis what and how to teach and learn in culture teaching in college English teaching on the basis of the research done by many scholars and my own teaching experience. Whether I will be able to find the answer to these questions seems uncertain, yet it deserves the attempt and trying, and it will help my students and me with my teachingThis thesis mainly focuses on the contents and principles of culture teaching for non-English majors in college English on the basis of a survey, in accordance with the newly implemented Teaching Requirements for College English Curriculum and the reality of different colleges.Firstly, the author introduces Teaching Requirements for College English Curriculum and the general situation of English Language Teaching (ELT) in China, and talk about the main purpose and the orientation of this thesis.In order to probe the situation of culture teaching in Chinese college English teaching, the author exerts a questionnaire to investigate the problems in students' foreign language learning mainly caused by lack of the foreign culture, especially the British and American culture. The research consists of four aspects of students' English study and is to verify the following respects:1) The students'understanding of culture learning.2) The students'intercultural communication competence.3) The factors influencing sample students'cultural teaching.
