The Study On Syntax And Semantic Of VLC And Some Grammar Problems Relevant To It

The verb-locative construction (VLC) is a syntax-semantics structure consisted of a verband its locative object. Based on Case grammar and GB theory, this article centers on theextension, the generative faculty and the syntax-semantics function of the VLC.The main contents include:1. "V+locative NP" is a neutralized construction from two structures: verb-objectstructure and verb-complement structure. According to the circumposition theory, eventhough preposition and postposition do not appear at the same time, the unite-composed frameexists. So the "V+locative NP" shed off or weaken preposition belongs to theverb-complement structure, different from the VLC.2. The VLC has two kinds of the generative faculty: the direct generative faculty and theconverted generative faculty. The deep cause of the locative object is its saliency hierarchy.Furthermore, this position marks the focus on the pragmatic level. The VLC satisfies thesyntax structure, the semantics structure and the information structure.3. Chapter three discusses the syntax-semantics function of the VLC. The fact that theperiphery locative enters into the nucleus part brings some changes into the sentenceinevitably: the raise of the syntax status and the influenced nature of the locative and theincrease of the abstract mode meaning of the VLC, but the semantics character of the locativedo not change at all.4. According to the above research, this chapter further analyzes three directly-relevantspecial types: the abstract class, the class from the ancient Chinese and the glossary class etc.
