A Research On Cultural Untranslatability And Its Translation Strategies And Methods

The limitation of translation has long been one of the core issues in translation field. This thesis mainly studies cultural untranslatability as well as the strategies and methods used to tackle it. It admits the existence of untranslatability and explains the cause of it. The author, according to the three aspects of culture (substantial culture, spiritual culture, custom and system culture), divides the cultural untranslatability into different types and makes studies on them respectively. This thesis takes that cultural untranslatability is a relative concept;therefore, it can be dealt with by using certain strategies and methods. Facing this situation, the author makes further studies on the translation strategies: literal translation and free translation, semantic translation and communicative translation, foreignizing translation and domesticating translation, pragmatic translation, dynamic equivalent translation and contextual translation. Besides, after the studies of the translation methods, the thesis shows, through large quantities of example, how to apply these strategies and methods in dealing with cultural untranslatability. The application of these strategies and methods has guiding significance in translation practice.
