Designing bridges the commodity and the culture. Therefore, it is both of economic significance and cultural significance. The fundamental discrepancy between traditional utensils and modern products results from material and technical situations. The comparability between the two above lies in people's inherent psychological similarity, which presents itself in the form of common aesthetic standards and cultural values. As a unification of arts and techniques, traditional utensils transfer cultural values and techmcal thoughts, which are considerably enlightening to designers of modern products. The thesis begins from analyzing Chinese utensil culture from the angle of arts and techniques. The art is a concentrated reflection of the aesthetics. Chinese traditional aesthetics is inseparable from the philosophy, Thus, research on the aesthetics begins with the philosophy. Chinese traditional philosophy is characteristic of the Confucianism, the Buddhism and the Taoism, which complement each other, with the Confucianism in the leading place. The Confucianism advocates ethics, the Buddhism upholds naturalness and the Taoism pursues inaction. Their aesthetic features lie respectively in that the Confucianism weighs substantials, the Taoism stresses vacancy and the Buddhism attends to charm. Then, guided by philosophy and aesthetics, based on Chinese traditional utensil culture and practices, it summarizes basic features of Chinese utensil culture, which hare present in the form of unifications of practical value and aesthetic value, functions and forms, material and craftsmanship. Finally, it concludes that utensil culture is dominated by three philosophic consciousnesses — harmonious consciousness, ethic consciousness and natural consciousness, which together reflects harmonious outlook on the society and the nature.
