The main research topic of the thesis is the usage of Sino-Vietnamese words in themodern news language of Vietnam. Firstly, the literature review looks at the study of theSino-Vietnamese words in Vietnam and the world over and reference sources andexamples for the thesis mainly come from Vietnam's news and media agencies. Secondly,the thesis provides a comprehensive historical background of the Sino-Vietnamese wordswhile figuring out their pronunciation, semantic, grammar and rhetoric characteristics,and thus their important role and function in the modern Vietnamese language. The thesis has three key sections:1. Identify the prevailing usage trends of the Sino-Vietnamese words in the Vietnamesemodern news language, including reducing Sino-Vietnamese syllables in proper name,borrowing Chinese terminologies, and widely adopting "Vietnamized"Sino-Vietnamese words.2. Examine in a holistic manner word formations of the Sino-Vietnamse words,including general and special forms of word formation, which constitue two typicalcategories.3. Provide a preliminary analysis of the practice of misusing the Sino-Vietnamse wordsin Vietnam's news language. Three main types of misuse are identified, includingmispronunciation, semantic, and grammatical mistakes. Therefore, some correctionsuggestions are made to help avoid similar misuse in future. Finally, the thesis makes some initial conclusions about the usage of theSino-Vietnamese words in the modern news language of Vietnam, offering certainreference values for standardizing the Vietnamese news language and language teachingin Vietnam.
