Modern China occupies a drastic changing and reforming historical period, the evolution and movement of gentry out of place obviously in each social class, the social and historical affection of it are remarkable too. What's more, the gentry is a privileged class with the active energy in the modern China society, were a privileged class in the ancient society, it's development and evolution as well as sharply change to the feudalism influence is obvious. It can be said that the gentry reforming is a reforming epitome of modern society. Therefore, the research no the gentry class is very important for analyzing the development the feudal society of China,understanding the historic development process of China, and concluding the experiences and lessons during the course of development of china's modern society. So the research on gentry has obtained much attention from the domestic scholars and scholars abroad.At present, though the research on gentry in China has been proved very fruitful, the research on local gentry is very deficient yet. And some achievements had been seen are on the eastern and south provinces, research results on northwest provinces actually very few. Especially that on the gentry in Shaanxi province where the gentry acted an important role in the reform and revolution, the research in this aspect is weak and scattered.This thesis, based on the achievements of predecessors, with historical materialism as guiding principle, studied by the multi-disciplinary ways of history, sociology, anthropology and so on. Probed deeply into the causes, process, results and effect on gentry's evolution in Guanzhong area of Shaanxi province. It analyzes the motive forces and impediments in Shaanxi's modernizing progression by researching the mutual-action relations between the gentleman and the changers of Shaanxi modern society (1862-1912), and aims to conclude some experiences and lessons for today's socialist modernization and construction.
