| In"The art of the novel", Milan Kundera proposed his unique idea of novel history and novel art. As a novelist, Milan Kundera has been fighting with enemy of art, the three-headed ghost: abandoning pseudomodernist kitsch; exploring the possibility of human being via writing meditation novels; entertaining readers with ambiguous recognition via humour. That constitute the great achivement of Kudera's novels and filled in his dogged fight with the three-headed ghost, the enemy of arts. This thesis consists of three parts.Part one, fighting kitsch. The definition of kitsch was first introduced, then Kundera's explanation about the meaning of kitsch at philosophy, politics and aesthetics levels. Coming next is Kundera's novel idea of fighting kitsch, the five major differences between the modernism he proposed and pseudomodernism, among which the core is criticizing the kitsch in pseudomodernist art. These kitsch arts are optimistic unreasoningly, lack of imagination, careless to the situation of human being, but hold abnormal passion for future. Not only did Kundera criticize kitsch in art and pseudomodernism, suspect its ambiguous lyricism, but also he combine this criticism and suspicion into his novel writing, explaining his idea with the help of characters he created. In this thesis, the spirit of fighting kistch in Kundera's novels was analyzed in details with examples from"The unbearable lightness of being"and"Life is elsewhere". |
