With the constant developing of China's higher education reform, a mechanism is gradually shaping up, which distributes the cost of higher education reasonably among state, society, school and individual. As a result, higher education in China is becoming more popularized. In 1994, some Chinese colleges and universities began to institute a system of combining double-track system of education into one. And all the rest had done the same by 1997. In 1999, China's colleges and universities began to enlarge their enrollment. This policy, as a milestone of higher education reform, largely increases the chance for young people of the right age to receive higher education. Surely, it's a good policy in the long run. But at the same time, it brings more pressure to the students in straitened circumstances. And it makes the number of impoverished undergraduates increase dramatically. According to the statistics by the Ministry of Education, there were 5,600,000 college students in China in 1999, among which 1,000,500 were impoverished students. In 2000, the number increased to 1,420,000. In 2002, there were 9,530,000 students in colleges and universities, among which 1,820,000 students were in straitened circumstances (790,000 of them were extremely poor). These impoverished students account for 19% of all college students (Extremely poor students account for 8% of the total). In recent years, the number and proportion of impoverished undergraduates show a trend of shooting up. Nowadays, the total number of Chinese college students amounts to more than 3,200,000, and the average proportion of impoverish undergraduates amounts to 25%.When they study in colleges and universities, these students bear not only great pressure of study, but also great pressure of finance. Opening and reform, the establishment of socialist market economy, the fierceness of competition in society, the variety of stimulation by circumstances, the pluralist outlook on values, the complication and intension of interpersonal relationships, the acceleration of the pace of life, the widening of the gap between the rich and the poor…these all add burden to the psychological load of the impoverished undergraduates in some way. Thus, the impoverished students may have psychological trouble in different degree. Many of them have psychological problems. So, we must understand, grasp, and pay attention to the psychological condition of impoverished undergraduates and enhance their psychological education. We should also educate them to become excellent both morally and intellectually, and healthy both physically and psychologically. And we should prepare them for China's socialist construction. All of the points mentioned above are important links for higher education and college administrators to serve the students well, to help them grow up healthily and to turn them into qualified personnel. These are also important new subjects that college ideological education faces. This thesis is based on my years of experience in ideological education. This thesis begins with the research in the psychological condition of impoverished undergraduates. And the thesis develops with thorough examples and scientific analyses in order to understand the impoverished undergraduates'practical psychological condition clearly. The analyses of...
