Resilience refers to the personalities, ability and social resources, which can protect individuals from the influence of pressure and negative things in the process of interaction between individuals and environment, making the person maintain the ability of self-control, and then developing positve coping. On the basis of overviewing the actual state of the research on resilience at home and abroad, researchers use the method of quantitative and qualitative research to explore the inner mechanism between personnality traits and resilience of impoverished undergraduates. In quantitative research, 1,696 impoverished undergraduates from ten different universities are investigated by the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionaire (16PF) and The Resilience Scale of University Students (RSUS). It is found that:(1)The typed personality characteristics of impoverished undergraduates are characterized by high level of empathic, intelligence, impulsivity, boldness, and low level of suspiciousness. The personality types of impoverished undergraduates can be divided into dependent-neriounesd, intelligence-independent, stability-boldness. There is significant difference among three kinds of personality(.05 - .001).(2)The resilience of impoverished undergraduates is above the level of middle, and can be divided into the strong, intermediate and weak.(3)resilience can be predicted by stability, anxiety, conscientious, dominant, radical, adaptation and anxiety pattern, cravenness and determination pattern, personality of mental health. (4)The core personality traits which have impact on resilience are stability and Suspection. The core personality types are adaptation and anxiety pattern, cravenness and determination pattern. Mental health, creativity strong, with growth in the new environment are the core personality factors which effect psychological resilience.(5)The stability-boldnes type can predict resilience at different resilient pattern effectively. In quantitative and qualitative research, we conducte a semistructured interview with 24 impoverished undergraduates. Through the interview transcripts, we got some important personality traits which can influnence resilience and personality characteristics of impoverished undergraduates under different levels. Such results are consistent with and also of suppliment for the foregoings. The following is our main findings:(1)The personality characteristics of 24 impoverished undergraduates are optimism, self-strengthening and independence, the sense of reality, self-worth, social support, positive coping, hardiness, indebetedness and positive traits.(2)The personality characteristics of different groups are not the same. The students in resilient group pay more attention to behaviours, while the ones in maladaptive group have some problems here, such as lacking conscientious, low level of self-control.(3)Personality traits, concluding Optimism, hardiness, hope, vivaciousness, self-strengthening can contribute to overcome adversity for impoverished undergraduates.
