The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of group counseling based on cognitive information processing theory on career maturity of college students, and explore an effective method for improving career maturity of college students.The subjects were recruited from sophomores and juniors of Shijiazhuang University of Economics, who had career decision making difficulties and entered for the group voluntarily. 10 students were selected randomly to take part in experimental group and 10 were selected randomly to take part in controlled group.The experimental design of fore-and-aft measure was adopted in this research. The experimental group took part in the career counseling group according to the group career counseling scheme, while the controlled group was in natural scene. Students in controlled group were given a talk about career decision-making after the experiment to avoid ethical problems. Tests were used before and after the counseling. Follow-up evaluation was given to experimental group after the counseling 5 months later. Instruments of the study included Career Maturity Inventory, Effect Evaluation Inventory for Group Career Counseling, Leading Efficiency Evaluation Inventory for Group Leader, Group Member Self Evaluation Scale, and Follow-up Evaluation List.The results of the study indicate that: the significantly differences are not shown between the experimental group and controlled group in career maturity before the intervention. The margin of fore-and-aft measure in the experimental group is significantly higher than that in controlled group in the Attitude Scale scores, the Competence Test scores, and total scores of career maturity after the counseling. The significantly differences are not shown between the after measure and the follow-up measure in the Competence Test scores and total scores of career maturity. The significantly differences are shown between the after measure and the follow-up measure in the Attitude Scale scores, but there is not significantly differences in the 4 dimensionalities of the Attitude Scale scores.
