Fu Donghua is the first translator who introduced Gone with the Wind, a best seller prevailed in America to Chinese readers. For a long time, his translation of this novel has been the center of controversy. Without the guide of a systematic, scientific theoretic frame considering translation purpose, specific social-cultural background of China and requirement of Chinese readers, most comments on his translation, whether condemnation for his"unfaithfulness"or glorification for his domestication, are made from a static, unilateral perspective. Vermeer, a founder of functionalism, established Skopostheorie. As he maintains, translation process is determined by prospective Skopos prescribed by the initiator but restrained by target text readers, their situation and the cultural background. In order to make functional approach more comprehensive and more applicable to literary translation, Christiane Nord, another representative of this school, put forward the rule of function and the rule of loyalty. The latter principle renews the translator's moral responsibility for the target reader as well as the original author, improving and refreshing the theoretic frame of this approach.Guided by functional approach, especially Skopostheorie, the rule of function and the rule of loyalty, this thesis makes a careful, systematic analysis of Fu Donghua's translation《飘》, and comes to a more objective and scientific evaluation. Besides the introduction and the conclusion, the thesis consists of three chapters. In chapter one, the author outlines the development of functional approach and lays down the theoretical foundation of this thesis.
