A Practice Report On Consecutive Interpreting From The Perspective Of Functional Translation Theory

Functional translation theory regards translation as an intentional human action,as well as a process transferring messages across cultural and language barriers through the effort of translators.Since 1987 when it was introduced to China,functional translation theory has provided a new perspective for translation studies and has benefited translators in a better understanding of translation.Consecutive interpreting task is filled with challenges,requiring the processing of a great deal of information within the limited time.Therefore,the interpreter needs to be well-equipped with vast bi-lingual knowledge,the interpreting competence and the ability dealing with emergencies.Consecutive interpreting for the lecture of infrastructure construction bears more difficulties,for it covers lots of specialized knowledge in science and technology.Therefore,this report is to make a detailed analysis of the author's interpreting practice on the foundation of framework and previous researches of functional translation theory.Based on the author's interpreting practice in Hunan Zhongye Changtian Heavey Industry Technology Co.,Ltd(CIE),the paper first gives a description of the entire interpreting process and emphasizes the great significance of the task preparation.Interpreting errors are then generalized via case analysis into four types:obstacles on term interpreting,grammar mistakes,information loss and improper diction.Combining with Skopostheorie(Skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule)and loyalty principle of functional translation theory,the author analyzes the causes of errors and hence summarizes relevant coping strategies,especially on the interpreting of science and technology lectures,including strategies on the improvement of term interpreting,fostering of skills on core information,accumulation on professional knowledge and development of good psychological state.The experience obtained from the author's practice is expected to not only bring benefit to interpreting practice of the other student interpreters,but also be of value to the interpreting studies.
