Fuzzy Language In Translation

Fuzziness is an inherent characteristic of human language, which facilitates our exchange of ideas and feelings, for it enables us to express ourselves freely. Fuzzy language refers to the linguistic units or patterns that are indeterminate and have referential indefiniteness. It has attracted people's attention since very early time and is still arousing the interests of linguists. From different approaches, fuzzy language can be classified into different categories. Subjectivity, indeterminacy, agglutination and variability are the main characteristics of fuzzy language.Although fuzziness is universal in all human languages, different languages may have different methods to express the same fuzziness. Therefore, fuzzy language has a close relationship with translation. In translation, we will inevitably encounter fuzzy language. It pervasively exists in different forms of the definition of translation, as well as the criteria for translation proposed by scholars at home and abroad. Moreover, fuzziness occurs in the process of translation, which involves the comprehension of the Source Text and the expression in the Target Language.The thesis focuses on how to translate three main types of fuzzy language: fuzzy words—words with referential fuzziness; words that make things fuzzier or less fuzzy—hedges; and precise words conveying fuzzy concepts—round numbers. Hopefully, by means of analyzing some examples, the rules or strategies of translating each type of fuzzy language would come out.
