An inherent charasteristic of language, fuzziness refers to the indeterminacyinvolved in the analysis of linguistic unit or pattern. In particulat, the fuzziness ofmeaning is identified when people are uncertain of the membership of some borderlandcases for a semanhc category with this uncertainty a semantic category fails to have itsboundary cleary distinguished from another, and as a result, its meaning cannot beprecisely defined. The realiation of fuzziness in actual utterance is known as fuzzy language, which, according to different approaches of realization, can be classified into three types. First,an utterance may appear fuzzy when fuzzy words are apparently involved. Here the fuzzywords can be identified through analysis with theory of semantic field. Second, thelinguistic hedges may be added to turn a precise statement into a fuzzy one, or adjust thedegree of fuzziness. The third type is fuzziness by implicature, that is, an apparentlyprecise utterance can be used and understood to have a fuzzy reading. With its semantic indeterminasy, fuzzy language is often pragmatically justified andthus enjoys popularity in communication. Besides, its skillfuI use usually helps bringabout special effects both aesthetically and pragmatically. These facts make the study offuzzy language significant. The key issue involved in translation study varies according to different types offuzzy language. For the first kind, since different languages might express the same ideawith different fuzzy morphemes, a good command of both languages, especially thehabitual usage of each, is called for in translation. For the second, the pragmatic functionsof hedges are given top priority and a pragmatic view of translation is required. As for thethird type, the key issue is about how to handle the relation between form and content. Ineither case, however, fuzzy equivalence serves as the uttermost goal, which can beachieved through various strategies like literal, transposing, restuting strateegies, etc.
