Translation Or Non-Translation

The present studies of Zero-Translation (ZT) remain problematic in following aspects: 1) The concept of ZT is vague. There is no differentiation between ZT and Non-Translation (NT). The present concept consists of Transliteration, Transference, Ellipsis, Sound-Meaning Combination Translation, Complementary Translation, Image Translation, Literal Translation with Notes and even Adaptation. The relationship between ZT and other translation forms is not clear. 2) The Mechanism of ZT is not studied. The problems of reader's acceptance and constraints from SL of ZT are not solved. 3) The Motivation of ZT is investigated not deep enough. The questions what factor motivates occurrence of ZT and what about its reality use have not been answered. 4) The category of ZT is not clear, limited in that of skill. 5) The significance of the study of ZT is not revealed.Based on the above problems, this M.A. thesis is to make a further study on thethree main issues: 1) The establishment of the concept ZT, 2) The establishment ofthe ZT View of Translation, and 3) The significance of the ZT View.1. It is a cross-cultural communication between SL and TLand thus not NT which denies translation purpose. In history, ZT appears first asTransliteration and then as Transference, which is an inverse translation thattranslator brings his reader into SLC to recognize and understand the SL item.Strictly speaking, ZT refers to Transference.
