This thesis mainly takes the news titles of the international news, the sporting news and the culture and education news of People's Daily from January 1st to 31st in 2005 as the research object. By using the methods of analysis and quantity statistics, it aims at the research on the grammar phenomenon of many fresh news titles, attempting to explore and summarize the grammatical characteristics of the parts of speech, the sentence patterns and the sentence types of news titles on newspaper. The whole thesis can be divided into five parts:Chapterâ… : Introduction. This part mainly introduces the general study situation of title, the reasons and significance of selecting the title of this thesis and the methods of study. In addition, it defines the phrase"news title"in a specific way.Chapterâ…¡: This part deals with the practical investigation on the characteristic of the parts of speech in news titles. It mainly focuses on the study of nouns, verbs and adjectives. Most of the nouns in news titles are those that refer to people or things. Nouns in news titles not only can be subjects and objects, but also can be adverbials to modify predicates directly. The verbs that refer to movement are most frequently used in news titles. Verbs in news titles not only can be predicates or the key words of predicates, but also have some special usages such as verb-object structure with object, transitive verb with special object, ect. The majority of adjectives in news titles are those that refer to the nature of things.Chapterâ…¢: This part is about the inspection and study on the characteristics of the sentence patterns in news titles. It mainly focuses on the study of simple sentences and complex sentences. The simple sentences in news titles have such patterns as subject-predicate structure, modifier-keyword structure, verb-object structure, parataxis structure, structure with consecutive predicates, appositive structure, and single-word structure. Subject-predicate structure is the major one in simple sentence. The logical relations between clauses of main titles that are complex sentences, or between shoulder titles and main titles, or between main titles and subtitles are: parataxis, continuity, illustration, causality, transition, progression, purpose, hypothesis, condition, and so on.Chapterâ…£: This part is concerned with the investigation on the characteristics of the sentence types in news titles. It focuses on the study of declarative sentences, interrogative sentences, imperative sentences and exclamatory sentences.
