The time of the 1920s in China was exactly during the period of China's New Literature Movement. China's national literature was experiencing a kind of literary revolution at this time. The aim of this New Literature Movement was to destroy traditional literary system and to establish China's new literature. The new literature advocators hoped to borrow some things from foreign literatures in order to construct China's own literature. Thus the translated literature in this period had its unique features. A special literary phenomenon can be found in China in the 1920s. That was the prosperity of literary journals and literary associations. Many journals, literary or non-literary, published articles and translations introducing foreign literature, which played a significant role in introducing foreign literature.The history of the translated literature in this period has attracted attention from the academia in recent time. Some books have been published with regard to the history of the translated literature in China in the 1920s. However, most researchers pay their attention to the translations published in books in separate edition. Few researchers try to study the translated literature in this special period from the perspective of journals or newspaper. This author chooses one of the most important journals in this period, the Short Story Magazine (xiaoshuo yuebao), to study the articles and the translations introducing French literature and British literature published in it from the perspective of the ideology and the poetics at this time.This thesis takes advantage of Andre Lefevere's idea about the influences on the selection of translated texts exerted by ideology and poetics. In China in the 1920s different literary associations chose different literary texts o translate as the ideology and the poetics they believed were different. The core of this thesis is the analysis of the French literature and the British literature introduced and translatedby the Short Story Magazine from 1921 to 1927 by examining how the ideology and poetics worked to exert their influences on the selection of the translated texts. Through this thesis, the author hopes to find out the ideology and the poetics embraced by the journal, which to a great extent reflected the ideology and the poetics in China in the 1920s. Thus it is expected to help readers better understand the history of the translated literature in China in this period through this thesis.
