| Trans-editing is a translational activity which contains both translation process and editing process. Trans-editing as a translation method has been frequently applied to translation practice. As a special translational activity, news report trans-editing has been researched and significant insights have been gained through different approaches. However, the previous studies have failed to discuss this translational activity in a systematic and integrated way: previous studies seldom research editing process from the perspective of translation studies;and studies on translation process are mainly confined to researches on lexical and syntactic level and researches on discourse level is seldom covered.The present study, drawing on current insights and samples about news report trans-editing, proposes a practical framework developed from German functionalism to make a research on the abovementioned disadvantages of previous studies. Thus, the present study, from a functionalist point of view, discusses editing process and translation process of news report trans-editing separately. It tries to solve the following two research questions: what cause the translator to edit the source text and how does the translator edit the source text? How does the translator translate the edited source text?This thesis finds that editing process is affected and instructed by translation brief;translation process is confined to norms and conventions in functional translation and translators' application of translation brief. These findings benefit the researches in other branches of pragmatic translation and translator training activities, but at the same time this research has its disadvantages. Further study is encouraged.
