This thesis intends to probe into the relativity of translatability between English and Chinese from intercultural perspective. The basic notions of translation and culture are elaborated first and the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis is introduced to briefly analyze their relationship. The cultural universalities, including similar human living habits, material resources and so on have laid a basic foundation for the translation between source language and target language. However, the cultural diversities are major factors that have caused the relativity of translatability. For example, the different geographical distributions, the material cultures, social norms and religious beliefs might have caused the relativity of translatability between English and Chinese. How to take measures to compensate for the relativity to better translate and communicate is yet another study focus of the thesis. Meanwhile, through the study of the relativity of translatability, the author offers suggestions to help the Chinese students with their English learning and the intercultural communication: to develop the language proficiency, acquire the cultural knowledge and to actively participate in intercultural communication activities. It is hoped that the author's attempt to analyze the relativity of translatability will be of value for translators and intercultural communicators.
