For more than a century, the study of the methodology in language teaching has always been a hot topic, and has been playing an important role in the process of language teaching and learning. In China, language teachers have been making effort to propose various language teaching methods, however, there is no single acceptable method to go about language teaching today. In English classroom teaching methodology has been a focus of influence of the effect of language teaching.On the base of Krashen'Input Hypothesis, the theory of cognitive linguistics, the active influence of immersion education, the theory of communicative language teaching and cooperative language learning theory, this thesis mainly reviews and analyses the concept, characteristics, the theory of language, the theory of learning, and essential teaching requirements of Content-Based Instruction(CBI), and puts much weight on the important role that CBI plays in Subject-Based English(SBE) teaching.It is, actually, the first time for instructors to integrate language learning with content learning due to CBI application to SBE teaching, It represents a significant departure from traditional foreign language teaching methods in that language proficiency is achieved by shifting the focus of instruction from the learning of language itself to the learning of language through the study of subject matter. This is, in essence, a reformation to the traditional language teaching. To test the effect of CBI, a pedagogical experiment of CBI application to SBE classroom teaching is conducted, validating the proposal to a large extent.This thesis also explores some problems related to CBI application to SBE classroom teaching, and then presents some reasonable suggestions and guide for solving the problems which affect active and effective role of CBI implementation in SBE teaching. In addition, this thesis explores the prospects of CBI application to English teaching.It is worthy of consideration that teaching methodology is one of the key factors which affect teaching results. Therefore, to choose an effective teaching method is indispensable for successful foreign language teaching.
