The Research Of Chuwen In Wenshi

WenShi written by Mr. Zhang Taiyan is an epoch-making bookmaking in the history of our country's linguistics research which ascertained the etymology according to the phonology. He considered it as an invaluable book 'WenShi is beyond compare in the past one thousand and six hundred years. Based on the Single Structure characters in the ShuoWenJieZi, WenShi initiated the concept Chuwen. The item group ChuWen and Multimedia Chinese Characters Teaching which was organized by The Applied linguistics Research Institute of Beijing Language and Culture University try to make full advantages of the past to serve the present, so they combine the theory of ChuWen with Chinese characters teaching for foreigners.I am honoured to attend this item group, and be responsible for the work of ChuWen in WenShi. My paper is mainly concerned with the following four aspects.1 The comprehensive depictions of ChuWen StudyAlthough scholars in the field of theory and research hold different opinion concerning the value of WenShi, they all regard it as the original work of looking for paronym and an important source for traditional paronym research. The definition of ChuWen in WenShi is that 'Simply speaking, it is the Single Structure characters in Shuowenjiezi'. The research of ChuWen mentioned in this paper is the research and analysis of that from WenShi and Mr. Zhang Taiyan. In the past 90 years, little research was made in this book, so I collected all the commentary work that I can find in more than ten books. Besides, I also consulted some papers in which WenShi is fully discussed, in the hope that I can grasp the development process of Chuwen theory.2 The database of Chuwen in WenShiAfter all-round and detailed research on the Chuwen system, we set up the database of Chuwen in WenShi, in which all 510 Chuwen are embodied. We may say this database is not only the precious fruit of my paper, but also the foundation for future successive research.3 The correction for some ChuwenAlthough WenShi is written by such a distinguished author, some blemish and flaws still exist. Specifically speaking, our correction is mainly concerned with the following two mistakes: first, the misinterpretation of the relations between grapheme and acceptation; second, misunderstanding of some Chuwen which is not a character at all.
