Haydn was one of the most important musician in western musical history, he felt fascinated at the oratorio genre late in his distinguished career and long life, and The Creation was to be his most brilliant and successful one. It was during his two visits to London in 1791 and 1794 that Haydn heard a number of Handel's oratorios, then Haydn was immediately inspired and afterward began to compose The Creation. As a singer ,I'm a lover of oratorios, The Creation is one of the greatest works and a classical German oratorio, so I think that it is very significant to study this oratorio. This theses is entitled by The Comprehension of The Creation and the Performance of the Angel — Gabriel. In order to learn about how to apprehend Haydn's art of vocal music, I have made a systematic research on his work's creative background, script, musical style , the major roles and my inspiration of how to perform Gabriel's arias. Moreover, the theses targets at the holistic analysis of The Creation to appreciate the value of this oratorio and what Haydn really want to tell us beneath the aparent level of the music, and tries to probe, from a certain perspective, about how can I perform properly the angel —Gabriel's arias. The whole essay consists of a preface, five main chapters and a conclusion, attached with a research reference. The preface is a statement of the purpose and the significance of my research. The body introduces the creation background, the script, the musical style and the major roles of The Creation and the approriate performance of Gabriel's arias. The first chapter introduces the creation background of The Creation, including a brief biography of Haydn's late years and the process of his completion of The Creation .The second chapter conducts an analysis on the script's origin and structure. The third chapter makes a comparative analysis on the integration of three musical styles in the oratorio. The fourth chapter concentrates on the major roles and foregrounded the importance of Gabriel. The fifth chapter profoundly states my comprehension of Gabriel and my thought of how to perform this role.Through reaserch and analysis, I want to grasp and express the quintessence of Haydn's works throroughly: his warmth, wit, earthy humor, ebullient optimism, and his profound ideas. At last, the author wishes to accept any criticism and advice from teachers, schoolmates, all the enthusiasts of classical music , as well as the lovers of Haydn and his Music.
