The Exotism Of Carmen

My paper attempts to analyze the exotic features of Carmen-the masterpiece of Prosper Merimee(France, 19th century)-in a Comparative Imagologie way.Since Carmen was translated into Chinese and introduced to China, the academic world has usually focused on its way of portraying the protagonist-Carmen, and following features of the novel: the refined portray of the characters, the mature writing skills, the satires, the calm attitude, the concise language and the precise structure. It didn't refer to the "exotism" of the novel much, but only a few premium study on the local features and lack of corresponding theoretical support. My paper will analyze the other in cultural reality, the writing strategy(including the respective state, writing background and the feedback of readers of the text and the subtext) and its special significance to the text and readers. With the support of "imagologie en litterature compare", anthropology and literary reception, my paper also analyzes the exotism from the cultural differences and relationships among countries of the time to the changing of the text type and the feedback of the readers. My paper can be divided into the five chapters below:1. What is "exotism"? My paper applies to the methodology of analyzing the whole text through explaining the concept and features of exotism.2. The other in cultural reality - remote country of Spain. This chapter stresses the other in cultural reality concerning the analyzed object.3. Writing strategy of the exotic features of the text. This chapter amplifies Carmen as well as its exotic features, writing background and feedback of the readers.
