| Art communications is an important branch of art studies. To great extent, art depends on its communications for a living room. In fact, a history of Chinese traditional opera that describes its occurring and developing is also a history of its communications. Growing in Chinese traditional agricultural society, Chinese opera has developed at ease in the cultural environments and communication networks which were created by its autarkic agricultural civilization. Nevertheless, when modern media—such as Shenbao, a kind of newspaper in Shanghai—occurred one by one, with a gesture of modern civilization, Chinese opera began its development and propagation within the communication networks which were cultivated by modern civilization. To be positioned in the field of drama communications, Shanghai's modernization process not only presented the representatives of mass culture—acceptors of popular Chinese opera and mass culture—that was the civic estate enjoying Chinese opera, but also cultivated public space of mass culture—theater and the medium of spirit space of mass culture—that was modern medium. Shenbao, which was an important medium accompanying with the developing of Shanghai's modernization, and has recorded much information related to drama, has fulfilled a significant function of drama communication. Thus this paper chooses the topic of Shenbao and drama communication as its research task, attempted to survey the relations between Chinese opera and newspaper medium from the point of view of communication, then further, to present a new viewpoint to survey a good many problems which Chinese opera has faced currently.This paper can be divided into five parts. Part one discusses the general instance of Chinese opera information in Shenbao, while part two, three, four, and five demonstrate what the functions of Shenbao to Chinese opera communication separately from Chinese opera news, advertisement, criticism, and market operation of Chinese opera. The part of conclusion, finally, briefly dissertates the similarities and differences between the communication by performing in the stage and the communication by modern media of Chinese opera. To sum up, this paper holds that every sorts of Chinese opera message carried by Shenbao, provided vast space for acceptor to grasp Chinese opera information and to understand and comprehend Chinese opera from several points of views, has fulfilled an unneglectable function of the extension and the communication of Chinese opera. Accordingly, if Chinese opera is expected to keep on developing in modern society, the communication function of modern media should be attached importance to. |
