The Word-building Of Abbreviation

Being disyllable is an important disciplinarian in Chinese word developing. As a laconic lingual unit, abbreviation is more sententious and more significative. In modern Chinese, abbreviation becomes more and more popular, and some abbreviations are used so continually that they have become new Chinese words. In accord with the disciplinarian of Chinese word developing, the word-building of abbreviation is a result of development of being disyllable.In this paper, the theory of word-building and abbreviation and popular words are combined, and the characteristic, degree and standard of the word-building of abbreviation are researched. It is acknowledged that abbreviation is a way of word-building, but not all abbreviations are words, and they must be determined by the degree of their word-building.In this paper, according to many literatures and dictionaries, the states of the word-building of abbreviation are classified as stability, metastability, instability and temporary; and according to these, abbreviations are classified as abbreviatory words, preparatory abbreviatory words, indeterminate abbreviatory words and temporary abbreviatory words. This research systematized the word-building of abbreviation, and this work was valuable in using standard Chinese abbreviation and foreign langue education.
