A Study Of The Avant-garde Theory

The avant-garde movements were important cultural phenomena of first half of the 20^th century in Western Europe and North America. They created a separate school in coeval art schools because of the rebellion in art, the pioneer in time consciousness and the repulsion in inherent formation. The avant-garde movements foreboded the possibilities of art development, linked two art currents of modernism and post-modernism, and generated reform acutely in art, aesthetics, politics and society. Its significance was embodied from these. Aesthetics theoreticians consider that they have no way to avoid it.The avant-garde theory is the total of discourse practice of contemporary aesthetics theoreticians regarding the avant-garde movements. The thesis takes the avant-garde theory as object of study, then studies and integrates it in three aspects, paths of study, dimensions of analysis and focuses of controversy. The conclusions are that paths of study of the avant-garde theory could be differentiated generally for two, namely art analysis and expounding from other disciplines. And that there are four dimensions of analysis of the avant-garde theory, history dimension, future dimension, art itself dimension and present dimension, taking linearity time as coordinate. And that it includes five arguable focal points: Differentiate the avant-garde movements and modernism, and the avant-garde movements were autonomy art or heteronomous art, and insisted on elite standpoint or masses standpoint, and inherited tradition or broke with each other, and were charged by commerce or criticized marketplace. Owing to different theoretic backgrounds, argument angles and standpoints, the viewpoints and attitudes of contemporary aesthetics theoreticians regarding the avant-garde movements are close or estranged, complementary or counter. After integrated, the system of the avant-garde theory has appeared preliminary. At the same time, the article gives consideration to the discussion and introduction of the avant-garde movements and the investigation of domestic propagation of the avant-garde theory.
