China has a long history of family education and keeps a library of literary resources on family instructions, which have ever affected the minds and actions of one generation after another generation. Based on others' research results, this thesis explores deep into the traditional family instructions of China by means of Genealogical theory and method. Family instructions have undergone a change from the booming in the beginning to the declining in modern times. Family instructions have also existed in four forms: dialogues recorded in other documents, complete specific works, legitimate terms, and family letters, all as a result of the power practice. Foucalt's genealogy of power system has made a profound influence on the research paradigm and writing pattern in social science studies. Take a look at the changing process of family instructions during thousands of years from the Genealogical perspective, we'll obtain a further understanding of those literature data on family instructions. Family instructions are not only a symbol of family education, but also a strategy used to control the lives of ancient people. With the elapse of traditional big families, family instructions seem not to function any longer. However, considering the time-honoring Chinese traditions, family power is still playing its part, and family instructions shall come back to life, making a wide and far-reaching effect on the modern society.The thesis is divided into six parts. Chapter one is preface with the research background, meanings, theories and methods. From Chapter two to Chapter five, four forms of family instructions are respectively introduced. Chapter two focuses on the family instructions in the form of dialogical records, explaining their features as well as the cause of appearance; Chapter three focuses on the family instructions in the form of academic works, with an example of the instructions of the Family of Yan. By illustrating the instructions of the emperors, the author analyzes the social function of filial disciplines in family instructions with a perspective of the family and the state. Chapter four focuses on the family instructions in the form of legitimate terms, and analyze the mode of family admonishments prevailing in the whole society. Chapter five focuses on the family instructions in the period of democratic revolutions, and analyze the change of family instructions with a new perspective of the transforming China. Chapter six , the final chapter, concludes and reflects the Chinese family instructions, and puts forwards the possible way of family instructions in the future on the ground of power and disciple.
