A Research Report On The Translation Of Collins’No Name

This is a retrospective research report on the translation of the chapter1-2of thenovel No Name. The author of the novel is William Wilkie Collins, an Englishnovelist, and playwright. His best-known works are The Woman in White, TheMoonstone. Collins’s works were classified at the time as "sensation novels", a genreseen nowadays as the precursor to detective and suspense fiction.This report contains four parts. The first one is introduction to the source text,including the information about the author of the novel, and a brief analysis of thesource text, and the plot summary, features of the era and writing style of the sourcetext. The second part is the overview of the translation process, all the preparation Ihave done, and the application of foreignization and domestication, and literal andliberal translation in the translation. The third part is the major part—an case analysisof translating the difficult paragraphs, sentences and word expressions， and ademonstration of the theory and method I use to overcome the difficulties in thetranslating process. I divide this chapter into two parts: one is the translation of setting,and the other is the translation of character description. In the analysis of setting, Iprove the operability and practicability of liberal translation. In the analysis ofcharacter, I draw a conclusion that we should understand the source text withforeignization at the macro level and translate with domestication at the micro level.The last part is conclusion, in which, I summarize the translating process, and presentthe strength and weakness of the translation. I show the shortage in the translation andstate the enlightenment I gain from the translation, and the direction I should take infuture translation.
