More and more international sports competitions have been held in China and sport has received unprecedented attention from all walks of life in China. In terms of academic field, the coming 2008 Olympic Games has brought about a brand new subject to the translation field, i.e., publicity-oriented translation of sport. However, due to historical and cultural reasons, the quality of publicity-oriented translation of sport is in general unsatisfactory, which affects the communication with other countries in the field of sport and the image of China in the international society. The thesis analyses the current situation of the publicity-oriented translation of sport in China and the causes. It also proposes ways to improve the quality of the publicity-oriented translation of sport on the basis of the Functionalism Theory and the Skopos Theory. The paper is composed by seven chapters including the introduction and the conclusion. The thesis has adopted the research methods of documentary reference and exemplification research. The introduction covers the background and significance of the research. The second chapter presents the current research of publicity-oriented translation of sport in China and in the world and the features of the publicity-oriented translation. Due to the historical and cultural reasons, the research of the publicity-oriented translation in the western countries are rarely seen and that in China is at the starting phase promoted by Beijing's successful bid of hosting the 2008 Olympic Games. The publicity-oriented translation is different from the literature translation. It has its unique features, i.e., accurate, background analysis and clear and easy for understanding. These features should also be embodied in the publicity-oriented translation of sport. The third chapter analyses the current situation of the publicity-oriented translation of sport in China and its causes. Adopting the research methods of exemplification research, the thesis presents and analyses the problems in the current publicity-oriented translation in China. The fourth chapter proposes the causes on the basis of the examples and problems, i.e., language incompetence of the translators; translators' lack of specific knowledge of sport; cultural factors; political and economic factors; historical factors. The fifth chapter summarizes and analyses the development of the Functionalism Theory and its contribution to translation and stresses the Skopos Theory and its significance to the publicity-oriented translation. The Skopos Theory and the Functionalism Theory should be the fundamental principle of the publicity-oriented translation of sport. The sixth chapter proposes ways to improve the publicity-oriented translation of sport in China from two aspects, the macroscopic ways and the microscopic ways. The conclusion part summarized the research of the paper. Translation is an activity with a certain purpose and the translation activity should be guided by the primary principle of achieving the expected function of the translated text. The publicity-oriented translation of sport is of strong purposes. Its purpose is to convey all the information in the publicity material to the receivers and make it accurately and fully understood by the receivers. Thus the Functionalism Theory and the Skopos Theory should be the fundamental principle for the publicity-oriented translation of sport. On the basis of the Functionalism Theory and the Scopos Theory, the interpreters should adopt flexible translation strategies in translation, such as supplement, interpretation, deletion and adaptation.
