In this paper, we reveal the general rule of love and marriage through the analysis of individual marital cases, reveal the inevitability of tragedy of characters and comprehend"the dream of red mansion"under this background of history and culture.The relation bewteen love and marriage in the book is deviation. Different from the former drama and text file, the author in the book do not advocate the marital mode of"they will be husband and wife if they love each other", but advocated the love rule of"starting with love and ending with civility". He denied the free love. The meaning of the love and marriage described in the book is that the love expects marriage, but not strives after marriage actively, only to be accepted by marriage passively. If the marriage do not consider affection factor, love will be ignored.Moreover, the book shows that the love is plunged into the embarrassing state by the polygamy. We can conclude that, like what Jia baoyu said"I only want a cup of though there is much water", love is selfish. However, in the family with many females, marriage requires the only one husband to be shared by several females, which is incompatible with love.The result is that: if love win, marriage will be injured, such as the example between sister Feng and Jia Lian, Xue Pan and Jin Gui. And if the marriage wins, love will be killed. Marriage without affection will be maintained and continued in the environment without confliction or contradiction. This kind of marriage will be found everywhere in the book, from grandmother Jia to Mis You, they shared one husband with other woman, and show no jealous or rejection. So the"peaceful"marriage brings no love.From this book, we can conclude that the reason for the deviation is the natural contradiction between the marriage and love. While the love is private, perceptual, and not restricted by status, the marriage needs two families, with rational consideration, to be matched for marriage.
