The research on the neoteric Chinese characters has been always a weak point in the study of Chinese characters, and the systematic study on the semantic clues of picto-phonetic characters in Li and Kai characters has been a blank in the academic circle up to now. Through the study on the transformation of the semantic clues of picto-phonetic characters in Li and Kai characters, this thesis attempts to generalize the forms and types of their transformation, analyze the backgrounds underlying their transformation, and approach the quality of the Chinese characters from this perspective. The thesis is divided into 3 parts:The first part is the preface, which gives the relevant theories, the status quo of the study in this field, and the purpose and significance of this thesis. The second part is the main part and the core of the thesis, which can be divided into four chapters:The first chapter generalizes the developing track of semantic clues of picto-phonetic characters in ancient Chinese characters. The second chapter diachronically introduces the transformation of the semantic clues of picto-phonetic characters during the different periods in Li and Kai characters. The third chapter introduces the different types of the transformation of the semantic clues of picto-phonetic characters in Li and Kai characters, which will be summed up as merging, replacement, bluff, and the transformation of form and position. Besides, this chapter also introduces the changes in the character formation due to the addition and deletion of the semantic clues. The fourth chapter mainly analyzes the reasons for the transformation of semantic clues in the Li and Kai characters, and concludes that the Chinese characters are semantic from this perspective. The last part is the conclusion, which is a generalization of the whole thesis.
