Eugene-Albert. Nida is a distinguished American linguist and translation theorist of the contemporary time. He has achieved great success in the field of translation and his achievements have ranked top in modern translation research. In the 1960s, he proposed a translation principle named "dynamic equivalence" which has exerted a tremendous influence on the translation studies both in Chinese and western translation circles. However, Nida's principle of dynamic equivalence has undergone ups and downs. When it was first introduced to the world, it won great acclaims both in the west and China, but later it was criticized severely and even rejected by some translation scholars. In order to decide whether we should adopt or discard Nida's principle of dynamic equivalence, it is of great necessity to study it systematically at great length. Theauthor of this thesis attempts to view this principle dialectically and comprehensively so that we can draw on the essence of it while discarding its deficiencies. The thesis consists of five parts including the introduction and the conclusion. The introduction gives a brief explanation of the reasons why it is necessary to make a further systematic study of Nida's principle of dynamic equivalence. Chapter One gives a systematic exposition of Nida's principle of dynamic equivalence. Chapter Two deals with different attitudes towards this principle. In Chapter Three, the author attempts to view this principle dialectically so as to gain some enlightenments for translation studies in China. In conclusion, the author again places emphasis on the dialectical and comprehensive study of Nida's principle of dynamic equivalence so as to enhance the development of the translation studies in China.
